Devil in Disguise

Rating:
4.3 / 5

Words & Music: Bill Giant Bernie Baum Florence Kaye

You look like an angel
Walk like an angel
Talk like an angel
But I got wise
You're the devil in disguise
Oh yes you are
The devil in disguise

You fooled me with your kisses
You cheated and you schemed
Heaven knows how you lied to me
You're not the way you seemed

You look like an angel
Walk like an angel
Talk like an angel
But I got wise

You're the devil in disguise
Oh yes you are
The devil in disguise

I thought that I was in heaven
But I was sure surprised
Heaven help me, I didn't see
The devil in your eyes

You look like an angel
Walk like an angel
Talk like an angel

But I got wise
You're the devil in disguise
Oh yes you are
The devil in disguise

You're the devil in disguise
Oh yes you are
The devil in disguise
Oh yes you are
The devil in disguise

Great song. Always puts me in a good mood.

A fun and uplifting song, wish he had recorded more songs like this one. It usually gets a re-spin when it comes by.

I like the sound of the Jordanaires' voices on that one. The musicians also support Elvis in a perfect way !

A song I never play.Maybe because of the corny dated instrumental break which was to become a by line for the following years.

The best, by far, Giant/ Baum/ Kaye work for The King, and one of the rare moments that Presley seemed to realise what was the path to good (pop) music in the 60's. Too bad that after this we would fall asleep again, only to weak up in September 1967 at The Guitar Man sessions, with a decade was almost gone! If he had followed this path the 60’s would have been a lot different. For me the British Invasion just happened with that magnitude because there was room for it since Elvis had abandoned the Rock and Pop scene! Once he came back for good he regain His Throne.

What a sizzling guitar solo! At these sessions the aim was to create a perfect pop sound, and I think they succeeded, but not by giving up on rock 'n' roll altogether. Elvis was really only 'asleep' in 1965. But in '64 you have the Ask Me/Memphis Tennessee/It Hurts Me session and the classic film Roustabout while in '66 How Great Thou Art...so there! It's really hard to appreciate the superhuman standards of the time: in 1963 alone, Elvis recorded enough material for 4 albums! No wonder I'm still listening to new stuff all these years later. And we complain?!

This was a great single and a great comeback on the charts after One Broken Heart For Sale. This was also Elvis' last great studio recording sessions until the Guitar Man sessions. There were probably more hit singles to be but they were buried on B sides and bonus songs on awful soundtracks. Another career blunder.

Reminds me of a nice warm sunny day. Nice melody, and stating the obvious...greatly sung. TCB

Another golden record award and high in the charts in 1963 also Uk at 1, Germany number 2 in the charts and in the USA a solid number 3 Hit of the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at 9 in the rythm & blues charts. Over One million records where sold than. It´s great a song I always like to hear.

This song , Marie's The Name & Little Sister were great. Wish he had done more of this than the Neo Classical Latin/Italian type songs he was doing at the time. This plus the late 60's material showed his brillance as an artist.

A nice rock tune although many were better. Elvis never left the rock scene, just took a "hiatus" trying to figure out what to do. Only hindsight gives one the right to say it was a career blunder or career builder. Elvis, like many artists then & today, have to make decisions on a daily basis. I don't think any of the armchair quarterbacks are qualified to do that.

Love this tune. In those days I enjoyed it and hence I still do. Joyous rocker, so definitely on my routine list. One of those many highlights of his longstanding career.

still on the radio over here from time to tome. I live in Switzerland.

Sorry folks, I can't stand the song. Reminds me to much of those awful film songs that littered Elvis' albums for nearly a decade.
dgirl wrote on July 19, 2010
Good song, but mostly forgotten by radio these days, even oldies stations. One of the few top 10s he had after 1962 through 1969 in the States. Should be more known as it is much better than 90% of the film songs.

An enjoyable pop/rock song that Elvis (of course) sings very well. 4 1/2 stars.

Great song for Elvis. It would have been a smash if Elvis had sung it on stage in the seventies. I really wish he had done that.

I song I never used to like too much but it has really grown on me lately and now I appreciate how good it actually is. The backing track on this is surprisingly aggressive for a mid sixties sound in a way that Memphis Tennesse just never quite pulled off effectively. I think that's thye key difference between this and many of his mid sixties output. Very few songs had this kind of infectious energy. four stars.

Took him right back to the top of the tree when it was released in 1963. A song with a lot of drive, excitement and a great instrumental, and yet another mystery as to why so many fine songs never found favour in his concerts.

This is such a spectacular, electrifying, unique, catchy, groovy, fun and energetic song and Elvis' rendition of if should definitely be much better known than it actually is. It's such a fun song to dance along to as well. It's a true masterpiece of a record for sure. I've never skipped it.

A good rocking pop song with a decent guitar solo. It has been used to good use in a Disney movie that my daughter likes, but I can't think of the title right now.
