one of my all-time fav cd's ever released, contains some excellant tracks from the legendary stax studio sessions and one or two from elvis' palm springs home sesssions in 1973. was a little disapointed to see that 'raised on rock' or 'sweet angiline' wasn't inlcuded on the cd. it would have been intresting to hear an outtake of these underrated elvis songs. still,a very good cd and captured. the real studio feeling of elvis in the recording studio and loved the 'studio banter' betwwen elvis and his buddies..disproving the myth that elvis was deppressd in the 1970's.

An under-rated, sometimes nearly forgotten release ...! There have been so many since it came out but it remains a favorite of mine. And it has to be considered a proto-FTD, as the "essential" series was definitely that. It basically was the collector / rarity "line," before they realized they could make a mint by selling them in smaller batches at $30 a pop!

A great release. All of these tracks were recorded at Stax in Memphis in 1973, not at Elvis' Palm Springs home. Promised Land, here, isn't as effective without the horns which were dubbed on later, for the master. Good Time Charlie's Got the Blues is one of Elvis' greatest studio efforts, showcasing a mature, sombre, softer side...a real gem. Between the summer & winter sessions, his voice is a lot fuller, his attention more focused. By this time, Elvis' voice wasn't really suited to out-and-out rock 'n' roll; it wasn't as ferocious, just bigger.

It would have been great if Elvis had incorporated this material into his live act, or toured night clubs with a small band, the same musicians he had here, and the same organ player, just playing these songs. Pity he didn't have the courage, or the ambition. 'I've Got a Thing About You Baby' really anticipated the disco craze. It's one of the man's best.
