Runaway

Rating:
4.2 / 5

Words & Music: Max Crook Del Shannon

As I walk along I wonder
What went wrong with our love
Love that was so strong

And as I still walk by
I think off the times we had together
While our hearts were young

I'm a-walking in the rain
Hear it falling,
And I feel the pain
Wishing you were here by me
To end this misery

And I wonder
Why
You went away
Yes, I wonder, where you will stay
My little runaway,
Run, run, run, run, runaway

One of the all time classics in rock music by Del Shannon. I love all the Elvis versions. His zest in 1969 on this song is undeniable. Im glad he didnt keep singing it as the 70's went on because you know it would not have been as good.

I hate to be the negative one, but this is one of the few '69-70 songs I really don't like. I didn't like Del Shannon's version with the flute or whatever. Elvis' version is a little better, but not remarkable. It's on the same level as Yesterday, don't care too much for that neither. But hey, there's lots of other great stuff from that area, both Vegas and studio-stuff :-)

A good live performance of the Del Shannon hit. I prefer Elvis' version (he is my favorite singer so that would make sense); but there are places in the song where he almost shouts the lyrics instead of singing them. Neither version is a classic; but both have merit.

I like the guitar over the flute and i think it would have been better if he had sing it later on.

It's an ok version from "On Stage",but I still Prefer Del Shannon version, I thought Elvis could have managed the high notes as he did on "Burning Love".

I much prefer Elvis singing this to the Olivia Newton John stuff he fell into later on in his career.

I Love this song. One of the highlights from the "On Stage" Album. Of course there's no comparison to Del Shannon's original version but Elvis' cover is just fine By me...

It's a great cover by Presley from an ultimate classic Rock song from the early 60's. But what I really like is the version we find in the Collectors Gold Box set (The Las Vegas disc) when The King, after singing this song, is as humble as saying "I think the Guy who wrote this song is in the audience tonight. I don't think I’ve meet him, but I really dig this song. I would like to say hello to Del Shannon. Are You out there Del?...Turn on the lights... Ohh there you are: Del Shannon Ladies and Gentleman". I Just wonder the feeling of Del in that moment... Went to see Elvis and ended being public praised and presented by The King in such a spontaneous way.

An entertaining cover from Del Shannon but not one of the really great covers like You've lost that loving feeling or Bridge over troubled water. Nevertheless, anything recorded in '69 seems to have some magical to it. Who doesn't like the version where the wording of the last couplet is changed 'Yes, I wonder, where you will shave... My little runaway'. Three stars from me.

Del Shannon owns it, but Elvis did a great live cover. I always enjoy listening to it, and recorded during a period when he sure was on top vocal form.

This is such a magnificent, fun and iconic song and Elvis' renditions of it were all stellar. In my opinion, Del Shannon has the very best renditions of it for sure.

An okay song. Nice to sing along too, but that's it.

The entire On Stage LP was fantastic. Runaway exuded high energy. It would have great if Elvis had looked for ways to continually improve his live shows.

5-stars for sure! Great song as sung by Elvis.

One of the great live covers he did in 1969. Its too bad he didnt revisit other solid rock classics as the touring years went on, constantly changing it up tour to tour. No, Little Darlin doesnt count!

What a fantastic cover. So different than the original in that it has more of a rock feel to it instead of doo wop.

A nice addition to the "On Stage" album but not a highlight. His live up-tempo efforts in 1969-1970 sounded great, too bad it went downhill after that. The only new rockers he introduced to his live shows after 1970 that I really enjoy are "A Big Hunk O' Love" in 1972 and "Burning Love" in 1973. 3 1/2 stars for "Runaway"
