ElvisNews review

In a continuous series of re-releases BMG decided to re-release the Camden release “Elvis Sings Flaming Star”. A dream release?

Design

The cover has a big sticker claiming “original artwork”. When we compared it to our vinyl copy of this album we saw a different back cover, just like the back cover on the “Almost In Love” reissue. And why no liner notes, this isn’t a cheap bootleg. And if we go all the way, we miss the Camden logo too.

Content

The Camden releases always were a strange series. The song selection was very different from the RCA (re)releases and sometimes an album could contain a different take. But not on this one. To continue our honesty, there are only four tracks that we didn’t fast forward; the title track “Flaming Star”, “Night Life”, although this last song could be even better if Elvis had recorded a more bluesy or raw version. The original “Too Much Monkey Business” perfectly describes what happened to Elvis record releases with this compilation as a good example. And finally, “Tiger Man” from the “’68 Comeback Special” which marked the return of Elvis as the performer who still had it. This quickly makes us forget songs like "The Yellow Rose Of Texas", "Wonderful World" and "Do The Vega".

The audio on this CD is very good. All tracks have been remastered (according to the sticker on the front), but since there are no liner notes we don’t know which technique was used. With so many great tracks waiting to be remastered we get "Do The Vega" in great quality ...

Conclusion

Finally this original album release is available for all fans who want to complete Elvis original catalogue, but if they will play it very often?

Play it often? I play this and all the Camden releases all the time. They're short, but sweet and to the point.

Another review admitting to not listening to the whole thing...? And this from an album that can't even make a half-hour? Anyway, I, for one, do and will continue to play the recent Camden reissues (well, some more than others) as they faithfully bring us some of the albums that hooked many of us as young fans. They were, like it or not, real albums of a sort and where many of these songs first saw such issue. Despite the less-than-faithful backcovers, these are classy reissues - especially at a budget price. Thanks, Ernst, et al.
