Just over a week ago Sony Legacy released the 11CD box Elvis Live 1969, containing 11 complete shows recorded during Elvis August 1969 gig at the International Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada. Is it worth the money?

Design

Well, to be blunt:. the package stinks. The box is pure crap. Box is even too much a word for it, coloured envelope might be better (and even a lot of envelopes are of better quality). I’m not even complaining about the quality of the pictures, but they deserved so much more. The CD-holders are about the most terrible things you can imagine. Even without artritis it is a pain to get the CDs out. Many bootleg labels would do a better job on this part.

The booklet is a kind of colour circus, but the text is readable, there is enough contrast mostly. The whole package is decorated with photos and memorabilia. Guess that’s just a matter of taste if you like it or not.

Content

The booklet is just a collection of quotes about Elvis or his shows and two pages highlights of the August 1 press conference. No essay with some more background information, which was common in previous boxsets. The tracklists are complete and they clearly marked what was previously available, and where for the first time.

We all know what to expect by now from this engagement. A frantic Elvis, with long boring monologues, especially when you hear it 12 times (CD box and double album) in a week (I have to admit I didn’t sit through them all). Some terrific versions of Baby What You Want Me To Do, showstopper Suspicious Minds is always super, Memories gets ruined by fooling around, well, I guess everybody will have his or her personal highs and lows in the box. All the highlights/ rarities were (of course) released before.

So all that really matters is the sound. In my ears that is super. It is well balanced, maybe a tiny bit heavy on the bass, but I happen to like that. So we have all the great tracks in terrifically fresh sound in their right context now. Too bad RCA only started recording on August 21st.

Conclusion

I saw some comments by someone who does not like the frantic versions of the old hits that much. I can understand that, but I prefer this Elvis way above the lacklustre, sick one from 1976/77.
As answer to the question “is it worth its money?” I can only wholeheartedly say, the package is absolutely not, but the content is.

Fabulous ! the box is really nice and well done contrary to the criticisms that I could read above that seems too harsh and unfair (I paid 80 € for 11 CD and booklet it's right) the presentation is in colors and design that fit the time, the sound is superb. I only owned the FTD at the international (2002) and all shook up (2005) so many new things to discover for me.

I love it... I sold my four FTDs from this engagement, and this box containing 11 concerts virtually paid for itself. I like the compact sized box (concur that the CDs are a bit hard to get out but hardly a worry), enjoyed the booklet and the quotes... the photos that adorn the two expanding gate-folds are magnificent (but then again how could you go wrong with Elvis in'69) and the sound is spectacular... I reckon it was a bargain.

I love the box set. From 3 shows they only did release parts years ago and now we get these shows in complete form. Also 1 complete unreleased show. ( If you didn´t bought the lp on the record store day. ) Realy very good stuff I enjoyed listening to these shows. Hey, it´s Elvis in 1969, what more can I say !

Can you imagine this released in the 90s? It would have flown off the shelves. I'm happy with it because I wanted this for a long time. but some of the strange mixes are well, strange. the packaging is bloody awful though, this should have been a box like the 50s Masters or something like TTWII.

I thought this was going to be something special, but the whole package is disappointing. It's not just the repeteitiveness of the song list but also the same dialogue as well. To me it represents a lack of commitment, easy money maker. Historically, you can't change a thing, including my long held view that many of the concert years were just a waste of time when we replay them now, pretty boring. Maybe we would think the same if he hit the road with just a 'five piece band'. He should have had two touring shows, jamming like he did in the '68 special, and a 'Vegas Show'.and occassional TV specials. I would even prefer a 'hits from the movies' tour... but too much work re-learning the lyrics I guess.

As for the repetetiveness of the set list and the monologues: don't forget that it;s a different audience each time that hadn't heard the show or the monologue before.

Of course. I said you can't change history, What Elvis did, he did. He could have varied it a bit more, some of the audience were lucky enough to see the show more than once. Elvis' performances were top notch. I notice that the author of this was not criticised for saying the package stinks, didn't listen to all of the material, and boring monologues. I'm giving my reaction to the package and I don't need to be reminded of the blidingly obvious

And again, I realy got mad about the storage of the cds. I will keep them seperatly in jewel cases to be sure that they last a long life. What they have done can not be forgiven. Why didn´t they release the box in the same format as the ttwii and 68 box ??? To save Money and make us fans mad about the storage of the cds, right ??? To the music: it is brilliant. Elvis is on fire, he loves to be back on stage in front of an audience and you can feel it. To the set lists: yes they are very similiar but look at other acts at that time or even today. Today we have all the concerts and see the concert song lists. But if you were back in the 60s you must´ve been lucky to hear these songs Elvis did or maybe you saw two concerts.It must ´ve been a gas, gas, gas !!! Indeed.

I might be a bit late for the party but for what its worth, I have just received my copy due to having to wait for my birthday today. I have not listened to any cd yet but we all know about the content and I can't wait to work my way through them. But regarding the package as a whole....It is STUNNING! The artwork and box set is very high class IMO. The booklet is of really good quality matt heavy paper, packed with live 69 shots that I have never seen before and I mean really good photos of Elvis on stage from all different angles. I've been a fan for over 45 years and have never seen these photos! Yes it may be hard to get the discs out but I can see what Sony are doing. This is a truly stunning modern looking package that's different from anything RCA have ever done before. I believe a lot of thought has gone into this set and I love it.

Tired of all the same 'ol jokes'? Don't forget that back then it was a SHOW! And you don't change the pattern night after night because some fans want to be enjoyed some 50 years after. This set is remixed and sounds so good, that if your'e a fan of Elvis in Vegas '69, this is a go get! There are some minor edits in there, but to me those makes the set more listenable! You get away from some tiresome repeat of the "same 'ol"! But, the Music and not least Elvis himself shines here!

Claunath82 I’ve also wondered about the use of the word Woolly Booger and I’m English! I believe it was a word for a hairy caterpillar but also used to describe person of low intelligence. But this is just internet research. I’ve listened to most of this set now and my earlier points have been even magnified by the pure sonic delight and dynamic pleasure of Elvis performing in 69. Don’t care about the same jokes (though the hound dog routine is too long).

Here is a trick to get the CD out of the packaging: Use a small piece of paper. Move it under the CD. Press the CD down a bit to that paper with a finger. Pull the paper. Voilà!

That's exactly what I did Gladyslove, from the first day I received my copy. But instead of jewel-cases I used plastic pockets that can take one disc on each side, then put them between the panels of the digipak. Fitted in perfectly without any damage and can easily go in the outer sleeve as well.
