This Is Our Dance

Rating:
3.9 / 5

Words & Music: Les Reed Geoff Stephens

We had a real good evening
Now all our friends are leaving
Soon we'll be alone
Wait till everybody has gone
Then play just one more song

'Cause this is our dance
Darling remember, it's our dance
Loving and tender
I'll take you away, take you away
In my arms
Yes this is our dance, now we're together
For our dance can't last forever
And nobody knows just what tomorrow will bring
So let our dance begin

We'll turn the light down low now
I'll never let you go now
You're here in my arms
And when I hear you whisper you're mine
We'll play that song just one more time

'Cause this is our dance
Darling remember, it's our dance
Loving and tender
I'll take you away, take you away
In my arms
Yes this is our dance, now we're together
For our dance can't last forever
And nobody knows just what tomorrow will bring
So let our dance begin

Written by two British guys, Les Reed and Geoff Stephens perhaps one of the better tracks from the disappointing album, Love Letters From Elvis.I remember Ken Dodd releasing the song as a single is that good or bad?

I kinda like this waltz. Always sounded like a soundtrack song to me, similar to the movie songs around 1968-69. I know it has a lot of instruments (overdubs and more overdubs) and all, but to me it was the best song on the "Love Letters From Elvis" album...

nice waltz, but never cared much about it

I'm a sucker for waltzes. I've always enjoyed this song and the album from whence it sprang.

From the 68 TV Special and the great 1969 Memphis sessions to Elvis doing Engelbert H like material. Thanks but no thanks. I guess the ladies liked this one though but a turn-off to the hip record buying record public who may have discovered Elvis with the LP From Elvis In Memphis.

i love this beautiful song and album!! If i ever get married this wil be our 1st dance wedding song. 'Dance" always reminded me of a tune that Engelbert Humperdink would record.

Alot of fans, and Music Critics, hate the fact, that Elvis, recorded this song, but I always had a "soft spot" for this song. Its a very "beautiful song" and meant to share, with someone special.

Lovely song, which was an important song at my wedding party, holding my bride! Elvis transmits the emotion so tenderly that it aroused that warm sentiment in all present.

a very romantic song

Elvis's tender take on this song paints a vivid picture of a couple that is often too busy to find time for each other. As the song progresses, he decides "enough is enough" , and that it's time for them and plays just "one more song" before he takes her away to - ah, well, you can figure that one out. Romance at its best...

I always considered this song to be "just a very nice little song" although well done until a very special couple in my life chose it to be "their song" at their anniversary celebration. The meaning behind the lyrics as sung as only Elvis can, has made me appreciate this song much more than I can express. Besides, we all can't be hip all the time.

This one does sound like a mature movie ballad. You could almost see Elvis singing this in "Live A Little, Love A Little" or perhaps "Change Of Habit". Good choice for an album track on the "Love Letters" LP, but it pales in comparison to the other ballads from a recording session that produced "Just Prentend", "How The Web Was Woven" and the other classics from TTWII and "Elvis Country". Still to be fair, this is a very good track and Elvis is in excellent voice.

Even though a lot of the fans, and critics, don't like Elvis singing this type of song, I have a "soft spot in my heart" for it. Its such a romantic song, and I like the beauty of it., and I Love to sing along to it !

Hard to imagine this is the same person that sang "Playing For Keeps" ect.

This song was a bit of a surprise when I listened to the Love Letters album way back. Nicely sung but not one that I seek out to play...now 'Cindy,Cindy' and 'Mojo working' that's more like it!

Lovely tune!
Steve V wrote on January 25, 2012
Songs like this are why Love Letters is considered the leftover album of those 1970 sessions. Marty Lacker has stated the crappy material was already starting to creep in again due to publishing issues soon after the great sessions of 1969.

I stand by my last comment.

This song ended up in an album with an appropriate title: 'Love Letters'. Not great but not that bad either. Obviously he could have chosen a better song or one more in tune with the pop and rock music of the time. History tells us that he usually had to choose from a limited number of songs that the publishing rights were secured. Publishing issues were always an issue in an Elvis (and most other artists) studio session. Money rules to the expense of art and creativity and Elvis didn't seem to object! I personally like it though...

This is such a beautiful waltz song and it's always been my favorite song from the "Love Letters From Elvis" album.

Englebert H type song on which Elvis stamps his own inimitable mark. Prefer this track in song lists I create as opposed to how it fitted in the origiinal album, which did it no favours.

This Is Our Dance, Heart Of Rome and Life are the 3 songs that REALLY drag an otherwise decent album down. Any 4 of: I'm Leavin', I've Lost You, The Sound of Your Cry, Rags to Riches, Where Did They Go Lord, or It's Only Love would have boosted "Love Letters" to a decent album. This Is Our Dance, Heart Of Rome and Life could have been put on Elvis Now, in place of the religious songs (Put Your Hand and Miracle) and would have neither hurt nor helped the even lesser of the two albums at all.

This is one of the few songs of Elvis' that I don't care too much about, but I can understand those who does, and maybe my taste will change over time as has often been the case when it comes to Elvis' music. But what I don't understand are those "fans" that will rule a song out just because it is/was not hip or cool, or because Marty Lacker or a reviewer from the Rolling Stones mag. or another "authority" has called them bad songs or thought they were below Elvis' dignity to sing. For me those people doesn't seem to realize that part of Elvis' greatness was his ability to lift a song up in another league with either his voice or the amount of emotion he put into a song. They also seem to ignore the fact that the wide variety of songs he recorded (from children songs to mature love songs, and from hard rock to soft semi opera, from blues to country and from gospel to rockabilly ),wasn't a sign of tastelessness but rather a sign of a broader taste (and love for all music) than most people have, this song is a good example of that I think .

Wow, I forgot this one completely even though I've got the Love Letters LP for years and years. Elvis voice is too good for this song, as was the case for many songs, but he lifts it up to a decent enjoyable level.
cookingfat wrote on September 28, 2013
A good song completely lost on the patchy album it came from sure I've heard other versions by Ken Dodd and Englebert? Which I suppose gives you an idea of how Elvis seemed to struggle for decent rock material around this period.

This was one of those rare songs by Elvis of which I had never heard and was surprised to say the least. Seems like an Engelbert Humperdinck (Sic) type of song. Not all that great and unfortunately on the hodge podge album "Love Letters by Elvis" not one of his better efforts but I'm sure put out to make a fast buck.

One persons left overs album is another persons favourite. That’s the incredible legacy and talent Elvis has and had. So versatile was our boy that he could perform such a beautiful, tender song such as This is our dance whilst another fan feels its lame. Wouldn’t this website be boring if we all wrote the same praises for the same songs. To my ears Love Letters is a favourite LP and love almost everything on it (except Mojo and Cindy). This beautiful waltz style song is one of the best on the album.
