I'll Hold You in My Heart (Till I Can Hold You in My Arms)

Rating:
4.4 / 5

Words & Music: Eddy Arnold Tommy Dilbeck Hal Horton

I said I'd hold, I said I'd hold,
I said I'd hold you in my heart 'till I can hold you in my arms
Like you've never been held before
Well I'll think of you each day and then I'll dream the night away
Oh, 'till you are in my arms once more

The stars up in the sky, you know they know the reason why
I feel so blue 'cause I'm away from you
Yeah I'll hold you in my heart 'till I can hold you in my arms
Oh darling please wait for me

You know the stars up in the sky, you know they know the reason why
I feel so blue 'cause I'm away, I'm away from you
Yeah I'll hold you in my heart 'till I can hold you in my arms
Oh darling please wait for me

The stars up in the sky you know they know the reason why...
I feel so blue 'cause I'm away, I'm away, I'm away, I'm away from you
I said, I said I'd hold you in my heart, heart, heart 'till I can hold you in my arms
Oh darling please wait for me

The stars up in the sky, you know they know the reason why
I, I feel so blue 'cause I'm away, I'm away from you
Yeah, I'll hold you in my heart 'till I can hold you in my arms
Oh darling please wait for me

What a vocal performance...he pushes his voice to new levels. He can't let the song go-- this song is transformed into the blues.

One of my all time favorite songs. Elvis sounds like he's totally enjoying singing this and I love how he seems to keep the band guessing as to when exactly he's going to finish the song, if ever. At least on the version I have anyway. Great tune!

this was my song that caught my spirit listening to it. I sai d I'll hold...I said I'll hold...this is Elvis' unique feeling for a song,...stunning, legendary...this start and then the song. memphis soul...all time classic. great favourite of mine. what a spirit one feels, what a feeling...for good music...what a dedication to a song. six stars out of five.

I've always wondered about the background noises and talking as the song starts. It's loose, similar to some songs on the Elvis Country sessions, and I wonder if it's exactly as happened or in some way edited or dubbed-in. There's a kind of magic to this opening, as there is to the whole album (From Elvis In Memphis), especially to those of us around when it was released. Elvis sounds so soulful and yes, it develops into a blues as he immerses himself into the song. A fabulous recording.

As with quite a few other songs whrn Elvis didn't know what else to do with it he'd blues it up. This habit got old for me. Don't care for what he turned this song into at all.

A country song that develops into a blues song. I loved it at first, but now its kind of repetitive to hear. The song doesnt really go anywhere, but is sort of like a loose studio jam. Just ok.

The old Edie Arnold classic given a completely different treatment by Elvis. A very soulful track on the incomparable Elvis in Memphis album

This ain't such a very extraordinary melody. Although Elvis's vocal performance definitely makes it worth listening...

Another example of how Elvis experiments with a new approach, a new voice rendition to get to yet another style to perform this song. It sort of fints in into the album recordings they were engaged in. Though it is a joy to hear his voice, it kinda misses that extra to make it to my top list. Yet, when it comes around I enjoy it as it stands out.

It's 1969 and Elvis is re inventing himself. Just like he did in 1960 and 1956 and like how he started in '54. The memphis recordings were ALL gems & this is just one of them. 4 & 5 stars everyone.

A bluesy rendition of a country standard that is one of the many highlights on the five star LP "From Elvis In Memphis". Not the very best this album has to offer, but still a 4 1/2 star track.

One of the great tracks from the Elvis In Memphis album, many of which could have become single material. I much prefer this blues version to the country versions that were knocking around.

As I said before 'It's was 1969 and Elvis iwas re-inventing himself. Just like he did in 1960 and 1956 and like how he started in '54. The memphis recordings were ALL gems & this is just one of them. 4 & 5 stars everyone.' This must be the all time favorites for Elvis fans. The Memphsis Lp's grouped together is surely the only recordings that can equal or surpass Golden Records Vol 1, Elvis is Back, or SunRise. With better selection and a few additions Love Letters, Now, and Good Times could have been good followups but the nearest I believe was Thats the way is Was & Elvis Country.

I have always loves this tune. Elvis really captures a special feeling in this one as he takes someone else's tune and makes it his. Come to think of it, Elvis usually did that very well.

This song is for the ears (and for the body playing loud). I don't care the lyrics just enjoy rhythm and sound, his voice, the bass, the drums, the cymbals. I don't care other instruments of the recording, they are just the minimal spice the recording needs not to be too falvorless

Unfortunatly not a favourite of mine, a rather mundane Song that goes on for to long. With all the fantastic 69 tracks to choose from this Song tends to fall by the wayside and recieves very little playtime.

Love it. Love the drums, the bass and of course his voice. 5 stars.Period.

Not a favourite song of mine that goes on a tad too long and should have been wrapped up in around 3 minutes. The dexterity and soulful power of the Elvis voice just about warrants the song receiving 4 stars.

Chips Moman didn't like the song and just let Elvis do his thing. For me it's more a soul song then a blues song. It's propably country, soul & blues combined. It's great.

After this great LP Elvis went back to hibernation again. 5 Stars.

This rendition is a Master Piece. The feeling that Elvis puts when he sings this song is so strong that it overtakes you. I love it. It’s one of my all time favorites!

Love this song and the whole album, but what is all the talk about this being the last great album ?! Personally I like Elvis Country just as much (and Billboard has it listed as one of the 500 greatest overlooked albums), maybe this is because Blues/soul still has got that coolness factor for many people while country is kind of hillbilly ? And what about That's the way it is , many people list this as their favorite. And while many later albums had a couple of sub par songs on them, then that doesn't mean that there wasn't great songs, for instance if you took all the stax recordings and made one album with the best songs instead of three, or took the jungle room sessions and made one album instead of two, then they would be 4.5 - 5 stars albums. But it seems like there is some truth to the saying, that if you state something as a fact long enough then people will start believing it. I just think that that is a big injustice to the great output Elvis made in the 70´ .

A country number which Elvis turned into a blues song.Great album, excellent production and choice of material. Why didn't Elvis keep to this script?

When I first bought From Elvis In Memphis back in 1969 this was instantly my favorite track on the album. This was the era of very loose emotional singing like Janis Joplin , or Otis Redding . Elvis does a great job on what would normally be a simple pop-country tune . Check out Eddy Arnold 's version to see how differantly Elvis interprets this song . I still love powerful Elvis version. 5 stars on performance alone!

This is such a terrific song and Elvis' rendition of it was long, splendid, powerful, passionate and unique. It's a gem of a recording for sure and I've never skipped it. "From Elvis in Memphis" is such a sensational album and I love all of the songs from it.

While initially I liked this song, it went on for much too long a duration. One can only beat a "dead horse" so long.
