Start Saving

If you were planning to buy the 50th anniversary set of That's The Way It Is by FTD/ Flaming Star, you'd better start saving. The price will be around 200 GBP (222 euro, 252 dollar). The price is without shipping, which is expensive too, since the package weighs about 7 kg.

I just saw the unboxing of this set. They took picture snipets from film and simply printed on a book. What a disappointing release!

I have greatly enjoyed FTD books to date. A Boy From Tupelo, Writing For The Kind and Viva Las Vegas are my favorites. My understanding is that this new release will include lots of info about the recordings. This will make it different from the Erik Lorentzen's efforts which are mainly about the photos and I will buying this FTD despite the high cost. However with so many box sets, books etc. the last year or two just from RCA & FTD, it is expensive to be a collector! I wouldn't be happy if I couldn't afford these or if I just wanted the cds...

Gorse: well said. As much as I'd love to have these complete sessions, this whole FTD project is just too over produced and I can handle an expensive FTD product like a complete sessions release. But with Erik Lorentzen's Summer Festival Trilogy on the market with Vol's 4 & 5 in the pipeline why would FTD even bother trying to compete. Their audio CD's should be the only draw card. One could only hope there will be a cut-down version of it.

My meagre offering to the comments is that regurgitated books about Elvis looking for another angle is a basic no no other than owning 'recording sessions' for reference and owning one or two containing the major events and people in his life. I would imagine 99% of fans became fans because of his voice and quality concert performances on film and not the written word. Definitely from an economic point of view not the best time right now to have non essentials costing this amount.

And lets face it. Ftd know we will pay the money. As long as there are fans willing to pay hundreds of euro's for an older ftd 2 lp-set.......

Nice cd collection for those who don't own all the bootlegs. Pricewise: regular books cost between €65-70 each. A 2cd-set costs €21.50 each. Total for this set around €230.--. Asking price is €220.00. Prices in Holland/belgium that is.
So pricewise it makes sence. But it's a lot of money.

I read somewhere else that this amounts to maybe 5 or 6 unreleased takes of songs we already have outtakes on!. For that kind of money? No thanks, totally non-essential for me. I dont care about the books at all.

Without the books I might consider a purchase. But as is, NO! Next.

A lot of money but a must have for me. Indeed.

Wow! That's almost half of my monthly pension!! Nah, I will skip. Unless they decide to release a version with the 8 CDs only and omit the books which I don't need and which are the reason for the high price and high postage. I'm sure they weigh a ton!
