FTD's 'Elvis On Tour' book / audio package has now been postponed until "the middle of 2023" due to various legal problems with Warner Bros.
Sony/Legacy Version
The Sony/Legacy version has been moved back to January 2023 but the audio will be available for streaming, thereby protecting the 50-year copyright rule. Shame. They've only had half a century to sort this all out and they still miss the anniversary.

The legal aspects relating to this should have been resolved and contracts signed before release dates were announced. The shoddy treatment of Elvis's fans that arguably started with middling songs and poor films c. 1962/63 has never stopped - middling songwriters, 'Legendary Performer' LP's with a mean amount of strong unreleased recordings acting as bait alongside interviews, familiar classics and familiar not classics (eg, an out-take of 'Guadalajara') and now massive, overpriced '68 Special' and 'Elvis On Tour' boxed-sets that haven't been planned properly.
Exactly what Audio can FTD put onto their book set that is not being released on the Sony Legacy set now coming out in January? Also is the delay on the Legacy box set the result of replacing 'Johnny B Goode' back into its rightful place at the start of the BluRay?
Oh I see it now. They are postponing the release until they get the rights to all the available footage that exists in the vaults and include all in a Special Edition Blu-ray/4k version. Dream on baby!
The dithering and lack vision over the years by BMG/Sony/FTD on this project has been an overwhelming disappointment. They had 2002 and 2012 to deliver on the goods but the powers that be were trying for the ultimate audio/visual package with hopes of including a re-edited special edition of 'On Tour'. Now having settled for only a Blu-Ray of the movie in this up and coming package, they have really failed us fans in the end. Knowing that there were going to be legal complications between BMG/Sony and MGM, they should have settled on separating both the audio and visual elements of the project and give us fans something of 'Elvis On Tour'. But it's too late for many fans who have passed away, having looked forward to this project.
50 years in the making and they still managed to screw up the project. Can you imagine these people having real important jobs?
So if the announcement is correct, the Sony box set will be released sometime in January 2023. The FTD book/cd sometime in spring. Can we have some details regarding the latter? I do not recall seeing any post for FTD book/cd EOT
Thank you Walter, I thought I was the only one who'd seen nothing about the FTD On Tour set apart from it being delayed. Some details would be good because I don't want to fork out for the Sony/Legacy set only to find the the same stuff on the FTD set.
What I realy hope is that they get it together and we will get a blu ray deluxe edition with unreleased film material. Get back from the Beatles shows us how to do a deluxe box set, nearly 8 hours on 3 blu rays. Come on, folks, you can do it, you can do it !
The Beatles Blu-ray is incredible! This is proof that it can be done if the right people are at the right position and making the right decisions at the right moment. Unfortunately with Elvis the word ''right'' was, is and will always be non-existent.
It's easy to cite the Beatles set as la vraie perfection, but as they owned it there were no hoops to jump through. On Tour is a different animal. Bits of the film and soundtracks are in private collections (obviously misappropriated from studio archives) with movie and sound parts owned by a plethora of potentates ranging from MGM, TNT, CNN, Warners, RCA and the estates of Messrs Abel and Adidge. At this time Warners are flexing their ownership muscles, as too should our good friend Ian Bailye. Will it be resolved for the RCA/ FTD audio box sets. I guess so. And will there ever be a remake movie? Don't hold your breath.
I am bothered by the same thing that ''I am Buffalo-Horn! '' mentioned. If FTD is not going to atleast dig deeper than Sony Legacy to give us atleast something we haven't heard before which I believe they certainly could if they want to, what's the freakin point. It's one thing that we still don't have more Video Footage made available to us fans, but when they decide to actually give us Audio material, there's no reason in the world not to dig and give us some material we have not heard. I will say that I love what Spang does when he remixes Elvis' Music. This guy obviously believes in making Elvis's voice stand out, even without undubbing. The Nashville box sets were genius and something we didn't have and in great quality. The few samples of Always On My Mind, Burning Love we now have from the New On Tour Box Set lets us know, he takes the same approach with mixing. He has a way of making Elvis's parts, the Backup singers parts and the instruments all stand out clearer without undubbing. I believe the Sony Box set will be great from that perspective. We will hear some things we've never heard and the things we have heard will indeed sound incredible. With all that said, FTD should be the one to actually bring the Audio stuff from the archives that we all know is there that we've never even heard. Then we can only hope Baz Lurhman eventually, before we all die, gives us the Video stuff we deserve.
To add to my previous comments, I believe they should without a doubt, make the Sony Box Set more special, by giving us the same film we already have at least in 4k......With all of the good that will come in the box set and there will be some good things there to appreciate, it is an insult to fans to re-package a blu-ray version that has already been purchased by the fans. The material in the Box Set, I know I will enjoy for various reasons, but the same Blu-ray that already exists in the hands of most fans, is like a slap in the face.
But all in all it is only one track from the entire box which has never been published before legally or otherwise and that is "Never been to Spain" from CD-1; Live in Hampton Roads, VA - April 9, 1972 (Evening Show)
