It's Diff'rent Now

Rating:
3.9 / 5

Words & Music: Clive Westlake

Look at you and tell myself
How wonderful you are
You're so different now
To me you're much more wonderful, more wonderful by far
Yes, you're different now
There's more to love than holding hands and stealing kisses
No-one else around
There's the good times and the bad
There's the ups and downs we've had
But it's different now I'm so glad I still have you

Ah

There's always something new to see
I look at you, you look at me
And we're so different now
Love gets better every day 'n in some peculiar way
It's always different now
If we ever say goodbye, you'd be lost
And so would I, what's the difference now between us
Love just for a day, and a love that's here to stay
That's the difference now, the difference now

I heard this song first at a deciding turning point in my life and fitted so well that it became an integral part of my regular song list. The rendition is so overwhelming to me that touches my heart every time I hear it and lightens up even the dark recesses of my heart. In a way it is a pity that it doesn't see to be complete, however it could not be more perfect the way it is.

A typical boring 70's song.

Anyone in England (in particular) who can get hold of Clodagh Rodgers' version of this song, recorded in 1972, is in for a treat. The song is fuller, longer, more complete and she sings it well. It was a major surprise and a treat when Elvis's short version appeared on the 70s box. I love it. It was written by Clive Westlake who also wrote How The Web Was Woven. It's maybe different now but it's also going nowhere !...Makes me enjoy Clambake !

A song that doesn't know where it is going. The melody changes several times taking the listener in different directions. He also sounds uninspired. He put more into 'He's Your Uncle Not Your Dad'.

I think this is a fantastic song just needing to be much longer. Why the hell he didnt want it on this album back then ?

It had potential and I would have liked to have heard a full version of the song with a little more enthusiasm by Elvis. Part of the problem with the "Raised On Rock" sessions is Elvis does not sound excited to be recording (by all accounts, he wasn't). The only other times that Elvis wasn't able to hide his discontent with the material, and the boredom was evident, was the "Paradise, Hawaiian Style", "Harum Scarum" and some of the "Clambake" soundtracks. The rest of the time, Elvis managed to put forth quality efforts even when the songs didn't warrant it. This song is tough to judge as it is just a partial track and an actual master was never made. It could have been really good had it been recorded in June of 70 and not July of 73. As it is, I give 2 stars, maybe 2 1/2.

I love the song, Great quality and the backing vocals are superb. I too, wish it had been more complete. Oh well, at least we have most of it!

One of my favourite Elvis ballads in the seventies..

Yes I agree lacking energy and direction, and I can't remember the last time I was tempted to play it.

Nice song I could have done without the female whaling in the background though.

I really like this song, but I wish that Elvis had recorded a complete and proper version of it for a 1970's album release instead. Unfortunately, it just wasn't meant to be.

Cooking fat is indeed ecologically aware! Whaling should definitely be banned..

There's a reason why this song did not see the light of day for 22 years after it was recorded -- 18 years after Elvis' death.

It's unfinished. So I'll give it 2 and a half stars. I don't find what is there boring. My guess is that if what is there would have evolved into a finished product I probably would be giving it 3 and a half stars.

One has to remember that this was not even take 1 but a rehearsal. Elvis was just getting the feel of the song and I’m certain it would have been beautiful had he recorded it. I like it a lot. 3 stars.
