Come Along

Rating:
2.9 / 5

Words & Music: David Hess

Come along, come along, there's a full moon shining bright
Come along, come along, we're gonna hit St. Louis tonight
Spend your money looking at the chorus line
Spend your money, win it on the number 9
Take your sweetheart even though she's never been
If she's worried tell her that you always win
Come along, come along, there's a full moon shining bright
Come along, come along, you're gonna win a fortune tonight

Hear the whistle, lady luck's about to go
Is she smiling, maybe yes or maybe no
Now's the time when nights are filled with sweet romance
Don't be bashful step on up and take a chance
Come along, come along, there's a full moon shining bright
Come along, come along, we're gonna hit St. Louis tonight

Come along, come along, we're gonna win a fortune tonight

Come Along and see my career start going down the drain. Awful movie & song. Bad time for a teenage Elvis fan in the 60's. How could you compete with the British Invasion, Motown, Beach Boys with this stuff?

Average track that was sung over the opening credits of the movie 'Frankie And Johnny". The movie is far from awful, it is actually quite enjoyable and fun. The soundtrack is solid and better than what came before ("Harum Scarum") and after ("Paradise, Hawaiian Style).

Not good, Elvis is not into this at all. Can you blame him? I bet he made a fortune that night, but what about the artistic ambitions that Elvis had but the colonel didn´t. This song and performance is shocking, but the worst part is, Elvis was going to record much worse stuff

Another bad film and soundtrack. Did Elvis need money so badly that he was forced into this rubbish?

Nice Dixieland flavored tune. I like it and the soundtrack a lot.

Bad song, bad soundtrack, bad film. One of the cheapest looking films showing Elvis in a setting 60 years earlier with songs sounding dated beyond belief with a few ghastly duets thrown in! This was hip 1966! What young person could relate to this? And yes, things were to get worse. But Harry Morgan was pretty funny.

It's 1966 and Blue River has just peaked at #22 in the Uk. One month later and F&J is released peaking at #21. The album doesnt do must better geting to #11. These were bad times for Elvis fans and songs like 'Come Along' didnt do Elvis any justice. And the worst thing was the recordings would get worst before they got better in 2 years time. Hard to give this even 1 star.

Elvis's catalogue is what it is, and 'what it is' is varied. Give me "Come Along" anytime, in preference to throw-away live versions of Hound Dog, All Shook Up or the interminable I Got A Woman/ Amen.

Copy and paste Steve Morse's comment for me please...

Amen, Steve Morse. Totally agree. What young person could relate, dgirl? ME. I was 16 at the time. I'll take this and anything else in Elvis' catalog over anything the "British Invasion" threw out there.

I didn't have any problem relating to this as a youngster (I was 16 then). I'll take anything in Elvis' catalog over anything the "British Invasion" threw out there. Yes, Elvis' catalog is what it is, and I love it.

I've always liked this Dixieland flavored tune and I like the vast majority of the songs from the "Frankie And Johnny" soundtrack album.

Difficult rating this song, as it fits very well into the film, but loses some of its lustre on vinyl. Nice enough, but never going to bring down any trees.

RCA could have picked songs from the time the movie is set in. That way they wouldn't have to pay for royalties, but alas, only the title song is a traditional. Still, I wonder what the young Ry Cooder would have done with this soundtrack if he would have arranged all the songs. He might have talked Elvis out of recording this and substitute the songs with traditionals.

Loved it when I was a kid.

Hard times because one was hoping for something "new" from our hero. The awful mixing of the album, no potential hit single material and a movie completely out of touch of what Elvis should be all about. But, I shall admit that the DF remix of this album actually made me like it. And watching the movie so many years after made me see it through different lences. I like it more now than back then. So, there you go!

Not exactly a top ten hit; typical movie dribble. In and out to be blunt. Same, same. 1-star.

Probably my least favourite soundtrack to listen to in isolation. But it works really well on film and is certainly not bad. I don’t have any problems with Elvis’s movie career cause I don’t care what other artists were doing at the time. Elvis has such a massive repertoire for us to listen to compared to any other artist, mainly due to the soundtracks and we get to see him in action. This soundtrack is poorly produced which doesn’t help but it’s still very listenable and entertaining. That’s what Elvis does, he entertains me and millions more. 3 stars for this number
