Some people say that majority of Elvis Presley 1976 live appearances was quite bad or totally incomparable to the previous years, but i must disagree with their view, because on my opinion about 95% of concerts in 1976 was pretty acceptable for people in audience and some really poorer shows were more than out weighted with few excellent ones. This for collectors quite interesting CD release offer us near complete Buffalo opening gig from Elvis fourth 1976 tour. And what we have there ?
In the first place I must notice you that we are talking about an audience recorded show, but the sound quality is very good for an on the road recording ,a very little better than well known ADIOS CD, and if you've buy the RUN ON CD you are satisfied with worse quality of sound for mixing desk recording you should like this Buffalo 1976 CD because the sound quality is almost comparable. Also the cover design is more than decent.
Elvis opens with usual numbers and you can notice in how good voice he was. But not only his vocal, also his mood was marvelous and he sung song after song without long pauses or boring monologues, only with some short comments or funny interaction with people between. Before Love Me Elvis introduces himself , as very often, as Wayne Newton and song itself isn't bad, just like following If You Love Me ., During second verse of the Mountain he fooling a little with the line ... tired of the sweat and grief and strife ... and oldies medley is O.K. too. Very strong And I Love You So is the next and after this its time for Jailhouse Rock - this song is done quite well, if you could accept these later modernized and shorter versions ( I always prefer the 68 Comeback and 50s ones). Fever is funny but otherwise good and immediately after this Elvis say to the band : ...Somebody was off ! . America is highlight and he continued with an rocking version of Polk Salad Annie with very rare Jerry Scheff bass guitar solo between second and third verse, by the way, Jerry was slightly off key. Main part of the introductions is missing. Early Mornin' Rain is nice but short, after all band member solos follows another highlight in form of Love Letters . Elvis then introduces Joe Guercio : ... a conductor, ladies and gentlemans, is from Buffalo, New York, his name is Joe Guercio, maestro ... . Two showstopper renditions of Hurt shows his vocal range and without pause he went into fast Burning Love with ...Girl, girl, girl ... line instead ... higher, higher , otherwise very well done. Lights are turned up and after short dialogue Elvis sang very nice (and quite rare) Happy Birthday to Barbra. The rest are well know songs and they are O.K.
Personally, I enjoy this CD, however now we have two unofficial releases exactly from the mid and the end of this same tour and in far better sound quality . If you are the fan like I am, who, apart studio recordings collect soundboards and only very good audience recordings, this CD is for you and you wont be disappointed.
As Al Dvorin announced at the end, Ladies and gentlemans, Elvis has left the building, thank you and good night, we like to thank you for coming tonight .
