Earlier this month this book by Steve Rino and Bob Rush was issued. Is it a must?
Design
The book has a bit strange format, being wider than high, but somehow that works pretty well. The layout is okay, although with some pictures I would have made different choices, but that’s all a matter of taste. Just like the orange background that is used. I prefer a more quite (white or black) background, but as long as you don’t hate orange it is bearable.
Content
The foreword is by Sandy Pichon, in the same style as her own books. Not my piece of cake, but there is some jealousy looking around the corner.
As suggested by the title the book is completely dedicated to the June 1973 tour, and I must say it has been well researched. Pictures of the arenas are present, bootlegs if available, tickets, newspaper clippings and so on.
The main part is – of course – formed by over 240 photos (according to the ad, I didn’t count them) of Elvis Presley in action. Unfortunately a lot of them are out of focus, but still there are some very nice shots included.
One little word on the man himself: It is obvious that even a one week tour takes some calories. On the first few pictures of this book Elvis looks quite heavy, even a little bloated, while on the last show he looks much, much sharper.
Conclusion
If these jumpsuit books are your thing, it is a nice addition. The best pictures were available elsewhere, but there were quite some shots that I didn’t know.
