Soul music pioneer Isaac Hayes – whose 1971 "Theme from Shaft" won the Oscar and Grammys – died Sunday in Memphis, where he lived. He was 65. A releative discovered an unresponsive Hayes near an exercise machine in their home at midday, and Hayes was pronounced dead at 2:10 p.m. when he arrived at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis. "The family had last seen him about noon," says Steve Shular, public information officer for that office. "Family members had gone to the grocery store and left him home. When the family came home around 1, his wife's cousin found him lying on the floor in the basement near a treadmill. The treadmill was running, so it is believed that he had been working out."
Hayes was one of the creative forces behind the soul label STAX, where Elvis recorded three of his albums in 1973. Also, it was no secret that Hayes and Lisa Marie were very close. Although the hospital is still determining the cause of death, Shular says Hayes most likely died of natural causes.

I seen Isaac Hayes in concert back in 1972 here in Knoxville Tennessee. I always loved his music and I heard he was a kind man. He was very talented and had a concert mystique kinda like Elvis. I don"t know how close him and Elvis were or if they ever met but Isaac Hayes will be missed. I don"t understand the Scientology thing with him or Lisa and Priscilla but to each his own. Same here, the STAX link is very weak... and his relationship with Lisa has nothing to do with Elvis. Good musician thou, it's really getting nice above!

elviskid80 and Lex, Comments about Issac were uncalled for. Issac visited Elvis at Stax Studio's in '73 and has said in a number of interviews how much he admired Elvis. For a man who is thought of so highly in the music world his death deserves a mention on this website. RIP Issac.

Who cares? I care. And you should too. He was one black man who admired Elvis and said so.
Unlike many of the black artists who call Elvis racist and accuse him of "stealing" their music.
Also, try listening to some music once in awhile that ISN'T Elvis. Broaden your musical horizions.
Of course I realize this will be a challenge for many of you because your ears can't listen beyond "E." Suggestion: Try "Hot Butterd Soul."

How ignorant! Whether or not you actually like Issac Hayes music is not important. The man had a family, he had fans who no doubt hold him in the same regard that we hold Elvis. He was a legend there is no doubt in that, but comparisons to Elvis are stupid particularly at this time. I'm not a great fan of his music but am sad to see him go and the Theme From Shaft is one of the best records from the 70s.

The mere passing away of a person is a loss to the dear and near ones (my condolances!). If JerryNodak's comments are correct he is connected to Elvis. Hence it is indeed proper to mention his passing here. His reference to whether or not one listens to other music is irrelevant.

Hayes was a kind man and revered musician. You didnt have to like his music, but show some respect. And by the way, listening to just country and 50's music does sort of make you musically challenged. Four other decades have passed and dont you think some good music came out of them? You are what gives Elvis fans a bad rap.
