Summer of ‘61

By ElvisNews.com/ Lex, July 10, 2013 | Book

The latest FTD outing on paper (mainly) is a book David English, Keith Russel and Pål Granlund, with the making of Follow That Dream as main focus.

Design

The lay-out of the book is beautiful. A good balance between pictures and text. The pictures are mainly black and white, but there are some great color shots too.

Content

As said in this particular summer Follow That Dream was made, the book handles everything about the movie, the preproduction, the recording sessions, the shooting and so on. All people involved get the spotlight, but also Elvis’ entourage that was present and even some fans tell their story of that particular summer. The nearly 400 pages are filled with tons of pictures, newspaper clippings and other memorabilia. It is way more than a picture book thou, it carries loads of information too.

The CD is a nice addition, of course we have most of the tracks a zillion of times, but it is a great compilation with all those songs from June/ July 1961. Not only are the songs from the movie among the better movies songs, but you can wake me up for His Latest Flame or Little Sister anytime! The demos of What a Wonderful Life and This Is The Life are fun to have too… very obvious that E stayed close to what the authors had in mind.

Conclusion

A pleasant way to spend time this summer, 52 years later… if you hestitated.. go for it, it’s really worth the money.
