One Night (2005 Single)

January 09, 2005 | Music
To celebrate Elvis’ 70th birthday The Official Elvis Presley Fan Club and Sony BMG came up with the idea to release all of his 18 UK #1 hits over 17 consecutive weeks from January 3 to April 25, starting with “All Shook Up” and ending with “A Little Less Conversation”. Sony BMG hopes that by releasing all of Elvis’s previous chart-toppers he will be able to claim the coveted 1,000th number-one slot early in the new year. Besides that “milestone” Elvis can also gain several other records as most #1’s, most Top 10 singles and most singles listed at once in the chart.

The re-release of “Jailhouse Rock” did the trick, giving Elvis his 19th UK #1 single and the 999th number one since the singles chart was launched in 1952. Can Elvis also score the 1000th number one with the re-release of his single “One Night”?

Design

This CD-single comes in the original US cover for the outer sleeve, the inner sleeve contains a copy of the original UK wrapper, a standard RCA sleeve. The vinyl edition only has the original UK sleeve, so no picture sleeve.

In contrary to the “Jailhouse Rock” / “Treat me Nice” single, this one has the same picture on both sides. The single also has the vinyl touch making it a real collector.

Content

The CD-single contains three songs; the original A and B side “One Night” and “I Got Stung” and the dirty ‘One Night Of Sin”. The first one is a typical fifties song, describing the urges of the youth. The additional bonus song is the “dirty” version, describing what the youth really wanted. Great they added this as a bonus song, because this should have been the version they should have released originally. The “I Got Stung” is a great fifties rocker, plain and simple.

Conclusion

Elvis celebrated his 70th birthday on top of the charts with “Jailhouse Rock”; perhaps he can be crowned again with this single, picking up the 1000th UK #1. The songs on this single are strong enough to compete with any “new” song.

For those who don’t care too much about the charts, these detailed reproductions are real gems to collect on either CD-single, vinyl (or both ...).

"One Night" is one of my all time favorite Elvis songs. 5 stars. I don't like " I Got Stung" quite as much. But it's still great. 4 stars. Had they released "One Night Sin" back in the '50s as has been suggested, it would have died for lack of airplay. Never would have made it past the censors. Elvis was having enough problems. RCA made the right decision in releasing the sanitized version. It's likely that Elvis had some input in that decision.

One Night? The greatest of the greatest! Raucous, explosive, powerful, truly magnificent. The epitome of the Elvis style. It more than makes up for Elvis fits of sloppiness’ in the sixties and beyond.

Dear me Dear me! will the fans who really want the complete set get to finish it. dealers are buying up stocks to make a fast buck and we are losing out. Ok so if it wasn`t ltd edition it wouldn`t be no.1 but hey at least supply the fan club with enough for all the fans that want them.

Whats with the sticker on the cover, you cant get it off without removing the gloss from the sleeve, all the thought and effort put into this set, then they spoil it with stupidity, please no more stickers on the sleeve. If anyone knows a way to get them off without ruining it let us know please.

Somewhere, upstairs I hope, "Smiley" Lewis is smiling over this reissued single again charting the U.K.'s singles chart, or what's left of them! A stone Elvis classic, for sure. Glad they coupled it with the allegedly-obscene, original cover version.

For Hillbillycat: Usually you can remove the stickers better when you warm it up a bit. The glue usually comes lose then.

one night , not my favourite of all elvis singles but the deterationing was about now and we would live with these second time recordings all through elvis recording career . it is here that anyone would buy elvis long as it was elvis . the only bonus was the other side it made this a double edged to get it a "1" rating . surprises me that one night was one of elvis' favourite .

eagleone there you go again , your flying too high mate! One Night is a fantastic blues number from Elvis , how on earth can you say it is a "second time" recording or "deterioration"? One NIght and One Night of sin are superb for Elvis' image and just bloody great recordings.

I wish I had the problem of how best to remove the sticker from my CD cover!! my local CD shop (I live in the middle of nowhere)! has just told me that not only can he not supply me with "One Night", but he is also unlikely to be able to get hold of next week's release.

Volvo thats rediculous, i just cant help believing ( sounds familiar) that sony/ BMG are making fools of us all, They should have enough stock out there like an ordinary single release. I dont want to hear some understanding excuse for sony/ BMG , the only excuse is Money Honey !

Anyone unable to buy any of the #1's should write and complain to; Tim Bowen CEO Sony BMG Music Entertainment Bedford House 69-79 Fulham High Street London SW6 3JW UK. Perhaps if enough write the powers that be may take notice. It's worth a try, keep it clean but forceful.

Just got some news that might be of interest to you all about one night. I got this email back from top of the pops saying they have been denied rights to show Elvis on screen for the 1000 number one but they do have something special planned. So i think we better all watch it and see !

Good work pacer1965! If it is true that EPE will not grant permission (again!) then I feel well and truely let down. The masses of fans that have supported Elvis over the years obviously deserve better service than this! Much, much better. Why couldn't a video have been produced that could have been used for all Elvis appearances on the various chart shows, maybe a collection of various video clips such as the one used in This is Elvis during My Way. Surely, it can't be that expensive given the exposure Elvis is getting. However, well done TOTP's for your effort. I look forward to Friday evening! EPE/Sillerman(?) won't be receiving much more of my support for any future projects if this is their approach.
