On Tour - The Rehearsals

By Dan Siciliano, December 25, 2004 | Music
Merry Christmas, Yes indeed it is. I think we will be treated to one of the best times in Elvis' career since "That's the way it is" came out a few years ago. The latest FTD release "On Tour" the rehearsals is , to put it mildly, awesome! We all knew that so much of this material remains "officially" Unreleased...until now! Of course, we are starting with the rehearsals for the smash concert tour Elvis and the gang would embark upon in early 1972 that would result in The King's last "motion picture". Ok, let's get on to the disc. First the sound quality, Very even and smooth with little if any hiss or distortion. The stereo separation is excellent with tight drums and guitar is clean and crisp. Elvis' voice is up front and strong with the back up singers properly positioned and sounding great. The song selection is upbeat and a great start to introducing us to this part of Elvis' life where touring the nation became the norm. Every song is rockin' and boy would i have loved to be a fly on the wall during these rehearsals. I can just picture Elvis sitting, or trying to, so hard to keep his body from making those stage moves while practicing. The band is playing there best sounds perfect. Tunes like "Proud Mary", "Polk Salad Annie", "Burnin' Love" and the list goes on and on are great smokin' versions. Some are a little short, but sweet! Previous reviews regarding "El Paso" are correct, for I would not really call it a "song", it's more between take banter. Now, on the other hand it is wonderful to hear the smooth as silk version of "Young And Beautiful", a real treat! All in all, the tracks are solid and Elvis is serious about the rehearsals for on most he gives his all, there is not much chatting in between the takes ( unless they have been cut ). Great songs that we have only heard "live" now have a closer, warmer sound in the rehearsal and sound more like studio takes. "Lawdy Miss Clawdy", this is awesome. We finally get that supercharged version of "Johnny B. Goode" from the opening credits of "On Tour"....YES!! To say that this release is "exciting" is an understatement. This is one of the most electrifying times in Elvis' career. We have so much to look forward to from this time period. If you thought Elvis was great during the Las Vegas shows, now we will have him touring America, packing in hundreds of thousands of fans, playing some great rock and roll of the day and giving his all. This release will go down with the best of the FTDs like "Jungle Room Sessions" and 6363 Sunset, etc. If you have slacked off buying some of the previous FTD's because you don't like "flat", "dull" sounding soundboards or you are not that keen on movie soundtracks, now is the time to get back into it and buy this release. You will not be disappointed, I promise you!! Keeping 'em coming Ernst, we're waiting... ElvisNews.com: We agree so much with this point of view, that we "promoted" it to our own view, with one little remark about the coverart. The additional text with the tracklisting in the inside is very unclear to read, even with glasses on.

I completely agree, in my top 5 for sure. One of the most enjoyable FTDs so far.

This is a great album! One of the best so far, and even better if you love the concerts from 1972 (like me)! Enough said. T. C. B. - Mathias, Denmark

This is a Superb release by FTD. Keep them Coming. I hope Warner/MGM will release a Special Edition DVD Box-Set of the Golden Globe Award Winning Movie - ELVIS ON TOUR. That will definately be the Best-Seller of the Year with all the fans hungry for this elusive classic Concert Docu-movie..

I hope they will release one day the ON TOUR deluxe DVD because I guess there must be some footage with all these rehearsals that we get now on CD. Maybe there could be too a commentary by the editor of the original movie, Martin Scorsese. I'm sure they could do the same with TTWII when you see what they could find in the vaults for 68 Comeback and Aloha.

Great release, but only 51 minutes. Now it's time for an On Tour DVD.

Like Ton says only 51 minutes, and it seems most of the chatting was cut. But Young And Beautiful was much better than I expected. And I love Elvis saying "But how we're gonna fade it on stage?" at the end of Burning Love. With this FTD you get a rehearsal that almost feels/sounds like a studio album at times. And I hope the rest of the available On Tour material will be available before I'm old, which gives Ernst a few years 'cause I'm 27!

It must be the biggest seller in the FTD, I think. Now it´s time for a DVD release of Elvis On Tour with at least pieces of all they have in their vaults. I think we will be surprised with the footages that will come some of these days.

If Ernst is reading this I would like to wish him a happy new year. I have the greatest respect for what he has done with the Elvis catalog. Many Elvis-fans dont know how lucky we are to have someone like Ernst to take care of the Elvis-catalog. Happy new year, Ernst!

One of the best things in 2005 is that Ernst is still in the Bmg/Sony Team. So he can give us more of these fantastic FTDs. On Tour Rehearsels is a fantastic release with much good stuff on it to listen. I hope someday we will get a Dvd with all of the material from Elvis on Tour. I can´t wait for it, and I´m surely not the only one to buy it. There will be even people who buy it, but they are not fans, but like the music. TCB.

I have not received my "On Tour - The Rehearsals", yet from what I have heard and read from other people's reviews this is a great release. I just want to take a minute to congratulate & thank Ernst Jorgensen for what he has worked so hard to give us, which of course is Elvis. As far as I am concerned he should be applauded.

I think it's a fantastic cd. But like others I do hope that they soon will bring out more of this! Elvis On Tour -The Rehearsals 2 or something like that... It's a shame that this material is coming out so long after '77.

Long since I was so caught up in an Elvis album! This must surely be one of the best FTD's ever! The closest we may get to a "studio" version of many of these performances! A real winner this CD!

Believe it or not, this is the first FTD I bought. As I leave in Brazil, these CDs will NEVER be available, so I decided to save some money and buy any FTD. When I was deciding wich one to buy, I saw this one and it called for my attention. I'm hearing it right now for the first time. The Young and Beautiful version is unbeliavable. I would never imagine such a complete and long version as this. If you're like me and deciding for a FTD, go for this. You won't regret. Now I'm hearing Hound Dog, and so far, so good!

This is by far, probably at the top of my collection of Elvis stuff; very good.
