Elvis – Rocking The Garden

March 13, 2006 | Video
Released by Memory Records and Dragon Heart Productions is the DVD “Rocking The Garden”, featuring both of Elvis’ performances from June 10, 1972 at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

Design

Like the previous Dragon Heart releases this design is a bit too much for us, it could be a bit simpler, not trying to sell it too much with bright orange “advertisements” with the text “Digitally Remastered” and “Double Features”. The designer did choose two great pictures of our man for the cover.

Content

This release contains original fan shot footage, dubbed with new sound, from a newly discovered audio tape according to the text on the back cover. The result; amateur footage (watching a very very old movie ona very very old television) with “professional” sound. To be honest, this is a release for the hard core fan, not really a DVD you put on to watch or show your friends. It shows around one hour of available material from the two shows, this is what’s available, and we’ll have to live with it. All fans who missed these great shows will appreciate to finally see Elvis perform the concerts we know from both RCA and bootleg releases.

Besides the concert, we also get all the available footage of the press conference, showing Elvis, his father and The Colonel at work. The quality of this footage is better as it was filmed more professionally.

Conclusion

A release for fans only, to enjoy the previously hard to get material of two historical performances.

if the sound actually matches the stage movements etc then i think this is a good release, but out of sync stuff drives anyone mad-so hopefully it's properly matched up?

A DVD is something to watch with your eyes. But there is not a single word about the picture-quality of this release. Everybody knows that this material was available before. But the review leaves open what we have here. Is the picture quality compressed like on the first DVD? Is it from a good quality source or even from the original film? This is what I would write in a review. This would be a reason for me to buy this stuff again. The orange writing on the cover and the fact that this material has been around for some time is not the thing here for us 8mm collectors.

The quality of the picture is average, the evening show is better than the afternoon performance. The sound is taken from the well known BMG releases and matches the picture very well. It's interesting to watch the clips and to see what the performances where like. The quality of the press conference footage is not too good.

I just can´t wait to get my Dvd but I have to wait till the end of this month. I have read some good reviews about that Dvd also some of them are not that good. It´s always the same some like and some don´t. But those who gave a bad comment about the Dvd they bought it, it´s true I know some fans. But after all that great releases from this label this one will surely be a good one, I am sure about that.

Yesterday I bought a DVD that is similair, the same contens to the Rockin´ DVD: A prince from another star. I just watched a few minutes and it is lipsynch and that´s in a good way. The sound is from the 2 Square garden Cds. A good one.

Sorry, but the name of the DVD is A prince from another planet; and not star. The name of the DVD is taken from an articel in the news papers back in June 1972.

I don't think I've had all the time to watch all of it, but it's a pretty good release. They do what they can with some sometimes awful quality material but it's matched very well with the sound and the shows move along fast and different films used. All around, as a native NYer, I say: Hats off! It won't get much better than this MSG set.
